Female sports journalists face vicious and relentless sexism on social media
Anjali Doshi, a cricket journalist with two decades of experience, writes in The Guardian Sport that while women have always faced sexism in sports, social media has made this abuse vicious and relentless. Doshi, citing her own experiences and those of colleagues like Alex Hartley and Melinda Farrell, notes that unlike the abuse faced by men, harassment against female journalists is frequently gendered, sexualized, and focused on their appearance or private lives. Citing International Federation of Journalists data showing nearly two-thirds of female journalists face online abuse, she calls for better platform regulation and increased civility in public discourse. Doshi warns that this toxic environment is forcing women to self-censor or leave the profession entirely.
