Israel’s Christians rely on faith and allies as they fear rising harassment

Christians in Israel, who make up less than 2% of the population, are expressing growing concern over their safety amid rising regional tensions. Reports indicate an increase in incidents of harassment and physical attacks against Christian clergy in Jerusalem. In response, Jewish activists and civil society organizations have begun accompanying Christians in public spaces to help mitigate these tensions.

Data from the Religious Freedom Data Center indicates that incidents of harassment against Christians in Jerusalem have nearly tripled over the past four years, reaching approximately one per day. Most of these incidents are attributed to Jewish religious nationalists. However, Israeli officials, including George Deek, the government's newly appointed envoy to the Christian world, have emphasized that any actions against Christians are illegal and that the government is committed to prosecuting those responsible.

In northern Israel and the West Bank, the situation remains complex. In Taybeh, the last entirely Christian village in the West Bank, there have been reports of property destruction by settlers, leading the IDF to declare the area a closed military zone. Local clergy state that despite these pressures, the Christian community remains committed to preserving its identity and faith in the Holy Land.

Experts suggest that the roots of this hostility lie in a combination of religious intolerance, the history of Jewish persecution in Europe, and tensions stemming from the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. Despite these challenges, interfaith leaders continue to emphasize the importance of coexistence and are working to strengthen interreligious dialogue to prevent the widening of social divisions.
