UN watchdog slams potential election of Iran to panel with human rights sway

Hillel Neuer, executive director of the Geneva-based UN Watch, told Fox News that Iran's potential election to the UN Committee for Programme and Coordination is "Orwellian." The 34-member committee, which plays an influential administrative role in how human rights and counterterrorism initiatives are executed across the UN system, is set for a General Assembly vote in November. The UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) nominated Iran in April despite Tehran’s documented history of systematic human rights abuses and crackdowns on women’s rights.

"Sadly, at the United Nations today—an organization founded after World War II out of great idealism to bring international peace—it is a case of the lunatics running the asylum," Neuer said. He highlighted that the Islamic Republic is a regime known for suppressing, torturing, and imprisoning women for demanding their rights.

While the committee does not draft human rights treaties, its administrative influence over global initiatives remains significant. Critics argue that Tehran’s appointment is inappropriate given its status as a state sponsor of terrorism and its ongoing suppression of political dissent.

Neuer attributed the willingness of Western democracies to acquiesce to this nomination to "interests, cynicism, politics, dealmaking, and a culture of 'go along to get along.'" He suggested that ambassadors from countries like France, Germany, or Canada often prefer to avoid friction with Iran or other member states rather than challenge the nomination. The Iranian Permanent Mission to the UN has not yet commented on the matter.
