James Tumbridge, attorney general for the Chagossian government-in-exile, described the base as "integral" to the regional security of the U.K. and the U.S. The base, which hosts 2,500 U.S. military personnel, now serves as a primary hub supporting carrier strike groups, including the USS Abraham Lincoln. While the shift to this remote base requires longer supply routes, it protects U.S. forces from coastal attacks by Iran. In March, reports emerged that Iran had fired ballistic missiles toward the base; British officials stated one was intercepted and the other fell short. These developments occur amid ongoing debates over the sovereignty of the Chagos Islands between the U.K. and Mauritius, with U.S. concerns regarding the transfer of sovereignty leading to the suspension of the 2025 treaty implementation.
