Toronto man charged after alleged break-in at synagogue

Toronto police have charged a 35-year-old man following an alleged break-in at a synagogue in the city's North York district. According to investigators, the suspect entered the synagogue near Bathurst Street and Lawrence Avenue during the early morning hours of August 18 and removed several religious items. Officers executed a search warrant at a nearby residence the following day, recovering all stolen items and arresting the suspect. The man faces charges of break and enter and failure to comply with a release order, and was scheduled to appear in court on August 20. This incident occurs amid a documented rise in antisemitic activity in the Toronto area since the October 7, 2023, Hamas massacre in Israel. Previous incidents in the region have included gunfire directed at synagogues and Jewish community centers, as well as vandalism targeting Jewish-owned businesses, with multiple suspects currently facing charges in connection with those events.
