US Marine arrested in Japan over suspected killing of woman

Japanese police have arrested Devin Jacob Ballard, a 20-year-old U.S. Marine, on suspicion of killing 39-year-old Anna Yagi and stealing her wallet and backpack at a hotel in Naha, the capital of Okinawa Prefecture. According to Fox News, surveillance footage shows the victim entering the hotel with the Marine, who later left alone. The victim's body was discovered by hotel staff after she failed to check out. Ballard, who is assigned to the Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, has denied the allegations. The arrest has prompted a strong formal protest from the Japanese government. Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi offered condolences to the victim's family and described the incident as brutal and deeply regrettable. The Japanese Foreign Minister summoned the U.S. Ambassador to demand full cooperation with the investigation and stricter discipline for American military personnel to prevent future incidents. The U.S. Marine Corps stated it is cooperating with Japanese authorities and that Ballard remains in Japanese custody.
