Gaza Reconstruction: Humanitarian Aid Pallets Transformed into School in Khan Younis

In the southern Gaza Strip, wooden pallets once used to transport humanitarian aid have been repurposed as the primary building material for the 'Mecca School for the Gifted' in the Al-Qarara area of Khan Younis. The project aims to provide a more stable learning environment than the tents and temporary educational points that have been in use for years. An engineering team dismantled and recycled these pallets to construct the frames for eight classrooms, including a dedicated space for psychosocial support, as well as the school's furniture. Each classroom measures 30 square meters, featuring a pyramid-style roof design intended to improve ventilation and mitigate heat. The interior walls are lined with white tarpaulins, and solar panels provide a portion of the school's operational energy. Due to the unavailability of whiteboards, the administration has opted for traditional chalkboards. With an enrollment of approximately 1,000 students, the school will operate in two shifts, morning and evening, and has created 32 jobs in teaching, security, and maintenance services.
