How AI is taking over the financial side of travel for consumers

Artificial intelligence is rapidly transforming the financial dimensions of travel for consumers, enabling travelers to automate tasks such as booking hotels and flights, managing budgets, hedging currency risks, and splitting expenses. Daumantas Grigaravicius, head of Middle East at global payments platform Adyen, notes that travel is one of the most complex payment environments for consumers, often involving transactions across multiple currencies, countries, and systems. According to a report by The National, machine learning tools are now deployed across fraud detection, foreign exchange optimization, real-time budget monitoring, and personalized payment experiences. These advancements drew significant attention at the Arabian Travel Market exhibition in Dubai, where fintech experts highlighted the shift of travel payments into a proactive and automated background experience. Abdulhamid Ahmed, founder and technical director of Halala Plus, stated that smart micro-budgeting engines analyze spending patterns on the fly and act as automated financial co-pilots throughout the trip. Fraud prevention is another area where AI has delivered measurable results, with Iata historically estimating losses of at least one billion dollars a year to payment fraud. Adyen has replaced static legacy models with dynamic identification to monitor actual customer behavior over time. Additionally, companies like Trip.com and Mastercard showcased the AI travel assistant TripGenie, which is fully connected to the travel ecosystem to compare options and manage bookings. Industry experts predict that in the near future, autonomous AI agents will manage the entire traveler experience from discovery to booking and payment.
