Hezbollah FPV drones continue to threaten Israeli troops in southern Lebanon

An IDF officer and two soldiers were seriously wounded in a Hezbollah drone strike in southern Lebanon. The attack occurred in the Ali Taher Ridge area, and the wounded were evacuated by helicopter for medical treatment. In response, the IDF struck targets across southern Lebanon, killing two senior Hezbollah commanders: Ali Samir al-Hajj Hassan of the Radwan Force and Abu Hassan Alaa of the Badr unit. The IDF stated that these commanders were involved in advancing drone attacks against Israeli forces.

The use of fiber-optic first-person-view (FPV) drones has become a primary tactic for Hezbollah. Unlike conventional drones, these are controlled via a fiber-optic cable, making them resistant to the electronic warfare systems typically used by the IDF. According to reports, Hezbollah has claimed over 70 explosive-drone attacks since March.

The IDF and Israeli defense firms have tested over 100 different countermeasures, including the Iron Drone Raider system, which uses an interceptor drone to deploy a net. However, military officials have acknowledged that the effectiveness of these systems remains insufficient. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu previously ordered the establishment of a special project to neutralize the drone threat.

Beyond technological efforts, the IDF is targeting Hezbollah’s infrastructure, assembly workshops, and operational commanders to degrade the group’s drone capabilities. Nevertheless, the recent incident demonstrates that Hezbollah retains the ability to inflict casualties on Israeli troops using these low-cost assets.
