Finland continues defense cooperation with Israel despite political criticism of Gaza war

According to the Finnish public broadcaster Yle, Helsinki and Jerusalem have extended their framework for defense cooperation through 2034. The agreement encompasses research, development, and the procurement of defense systems, alongside a permanent coordination mechanism between the two nations. A primary manifestation of this partnership is Finland's decision to purchase Israel's David’s Sling air defense system in a deal valued at approximately 317 million euros. Developed by Israel’s Rafael in collaboration with the United States, the system is designed to counter medium- and long-range aerial and missile threats. These strategic ties persist despite intensifying criticism of Israel within Finland and across Europe regarding the humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip, with some Finnish officials leveling accusations of 'genocide.' Yle reports that the Finnish Ministry of Defense is withholding specific details regarding its ongoing cooperation with Israel.
