Trump sends envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv with plan to end Ukraine war

US President Donald Trump announced on Friday that he is sending Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner to Moscow and Kyiv with a proposal to end more than four years of war in Ukraine. This move marks a fresh attempt by Washington to break the diplomatic stalemate in Europe's deadliest conflict since World War II. A senior Ukrainian official told AFP that the envoys are expected in Kyiv on Sunday. Axios reported that they are scheduled to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Saturday and President Volodymyr Zelensky in Kyiv on Sunday. The Kremlin has declined to comment. Trump stated that the negotiators would seek to gauge whether progress toward peace is possible, adding, "They're bringing with them a proposal to end the war." The president did not disclose whether the plan involves Ukraine ceding territory. Meanwhile, President Zelensky proposed a ceasefire for the duration of the US envoys' visit, stating, "There will be no airstrikes on our part, and Russia must reciprocally ensure a ceasefire." This diplomatic push follows a Russian drone strike on the headquarters of Ukraine's SBU security service in central Kyiv, which Zelensky described as an unprecedented attack.
