Iran turns universities into a new front in crackdown on dissent

According to Ynet, Iranian universities have become a new front for suppressing dissent. Protesting students are being pressured through disciplinary committees that include representatives of the Supreme Leader and security agencies. The report states that following the massive January protests and the outbreak of war, authorities are aiming to root out dissent by threatening students with expulsion, bans on further study, and psychological pressure. Student unions and activists report that dozens of students have been expelled or suspended at institutions such as the University of Tehran and Sharif University of Technology. It is also reported that security agencies and the Basij militia play an active role in identifying and building cases against students. Students state that the wartime atmosphere has allowed authorities to further securitize the campus environment and intensify the crackdown.
