Tensions Rise Between Damascus and Tehran; Iran Threatens Missile Strikes Against New Syrian Government

Relations between Iran and Syria have reached an unprecedented low following the fall of the Bashar al-Assad regime in December 2024. According to Israel's Channel 14, Tehran has issued severe warnings to Damascus through diplomatic channels in response to reports that the new Syrian government, led by Abu Muhammad al-Julani, may act against Hezbollah infrastructure in Lebanon. It is reported that Iran has threatened to strike over 100 strategic targets in Syria, including the presidential palace in Damascus, with ballistic missiles should such actions occur. The new Syrian government, which has adopted a policy of active neutrality and prioritized national reconstruction, is attempting to distance itself from regional conflicts. However, Iran, which views Hezbollah as a key strategic asset, has warned that any operation against the group in Lebanon will be met with a broad response within Syrian territory. These tensions have escalated as Damascus continues to dismantle the military and logistical infrastructure left behind from the era of IRGC and Hezbollah influence in Syria.
