Tony Pulis: Why managers can learn a lot from leaders like Napoleon

Writing for BBC Sport, veteran manager Tony Pulis discusses the realities faced by out-of-work football managers during international breaks. Recalling his first sacking at Bournemouth over 32 years ago and advice from the late Jim Smith, Pulis emphasizes that managers must stay active. He shares how he spent periods between jobs scouting for Bruce Rioch at Bolton, watching matches among supporters, and intensely studying historical leaders such as Napoleon Bonaparte and Ernest Shackleton, as well as military failures like the Charge of the Light Brigade. Pulis advises unemployed managers to pick themselves up and not be afraid of dropping down a level to secure a job.
