Joshua Wong, face of Hong Kong’s pro-democracy protests, jailed for 10 years

According to the BBC, Joshua Wong, a 30-year-old activist and a prominent face of Hong Kong's democracy movement, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for colluding with foreign forces under the city's national security law. Wong, who has been in custody since 2020, was already serving time for other charges and was due for release in January; however, the new sentence adds a decade to his imprisonment. Prosecutors alleged that he conspired with other activists to lobby for foreign sanctions against Beijing. Hong Kong Chief Executive John Lee defended the ruling as necessary for maintaining stability and national security, while human rights organizations described the verdict as cruel and part of a broader political crackdown on dissent.
