Iran executes man who allegedly rammed police officers

The Iranian judiciary announced on Sunday that it has executed Shahram Sadeghi, who was convicted of ramming police officers with his vehicle during anti-government protests in January. According to the judiciary's Mizan Online website, Sadeghi was sentenced to death for carrying out an operational action allegedly in support of Israel and the United States. The authorities stated that the incident occurred on January 8 in Karaj, west of Tehran, resulting in injuries to seven police officers. The Iranian government frequently accuses individuals of spying for or collaborating with Israel and the US, often without providing independent evidence. The protests, which began in late December due to economic grievances, were met with a severe crackdown by security forces. Human rights organizations, including Iran Human Rights and Together Against the Death Penalty, have reported that the number of executions in Iran reached a record high last year, the highest since 1989.
