Family of Indian-American woman missing after Nepal-Tibet floods hold on to hope

The family of Jiwan Jyoti, a Boston-based engineer who traveled to Nepal to mark her 50th birthday, is clinging to hope following catastrophic floods in Nepal and Tibet that have left over 2,000 people missing. Her last known contact was a nine-minute phone call with her husband in the US on Wednesday from the Hotel Kailash in Rasuwagadhi, near the Chinese border. Her husband, who has since traveled to Nepal to seek updates, told The National that communication ceased immediately after that call. According to the latest update from Nepal Police on Saturday, 626 people have been confirmed dead and 1,473 injured, with over 4,000 personnel involved in rescue efforts. Jyoti’s family remains hopeful that she and others in the area may have reached higher ground before the floods struck. They have urged authorities to continue the search, emphasizing that they are not ready to abandon hope for her survival.
