Reservist dies by suicide following service in Gaza war

Uriel Molto Getahon, a 24-year-old IDF reservist from Karmiel, died by suicide on Thursday while not on active duty. Friends and local officials have highlighted the incident as a stark reminder of the hidden psychological toll that soldiers face after returning from combat. The brother of a friend who fell in the Gaza Strip in February 2024 noted that while soldiers may return physically healthy, they often carry deep, invisible wounds. Karmiel Mayor Moshe Koninsky expressed his condolences and argued that current support systems for reservists are insufficient, calling for greater focus on mental health care in the post-service period. The IDF spokesperson stated that an initial review suggests a potential link between Getahon's death and his military service. The military is now providing assistance to the family and has offered guidance on the process for having him officially recognized as having died as a result of service, which would entitle the family to state support.
