CAR: Special Criminal Court on the brink of collapse, says Amnesty

According to a new report published by Amnesty International in October 2026, suspected perpetrators of crimes under international law in the Central African Republic, including high-ranking officials, risk escaping justice unless the Special Criminal Court (SCC) receives required funding. The hybrid court, inaugurated in October 2018, has tried six cases and convicted 19 people for war crimes and crimes against humanity. However, following the withdrawal of financial support by the United States in 2025 and a severe lack of contributions from other states besides the UN and EU, the court faces an unprecedented financial crisis that forced it to lay off a quarter of its staff and halted new investigations. Marceau Sivieude, Amnesty International's Regional Director for West and Central Africa, stressed that victims' rights to justice must not depend on shifting donor priorities and called on authorities and international partners to provide urgent financial support.
