Two Israeli universities listed among top 100 worldwide in Shanghai Ranking

According to the Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), released Saturday by the Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, two Israeli research universities have secured spots among the top 100 globally. The Hebrew University of Jerusalem ranked 89th, a slight decline from 88th last year, while the Weizmann Institute of Science maintained its 71st position. The Technion – Israel Institute of Technology, which held the 97th spot last year, has fallen out of the top 100 into the 101-150 range. Tel Aviv University was placed in the 151-200 bracket, and Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in the 401-500 range. The Shanghai Ranking evaluates approximately 2,500 universities based on indicators such as faculty and alumni who have received international awards and the quality of peer-reviewed publications. The top 10 spots are dominated by US and UK institutions, including Harvard, Stanford, and MIT. The Times of Israel report notes that the decline in rankings for some Israeli institutions coincides with a trend of brain drain, which the report suggests has intensified since 2023 due to domestic political tensions and the ongoing conflict.
