Major League Soccer Sets Record for Player Transfer Spending in 2026

Major League Soccer (MLS) has announced that its clubs spent a total of $370 million on player acquisitions in 2026, setting a new record. This figure surpasses the previous record of $336 million set last year and is more than double the spending recorded in 2023. According to Reuters, eight clubs broke their own transfer records this year, with St. Louis City breaking its record twice. Among the most significant deals in the league's history was the reported $22 million transfer of Josh Sargent to Toronto in February. In total, 186 players from 51 countries joined the league in 2026, including over 30 players from Europe's top five leagues and 30 players with World Cup experience. Conversely, the league also set a record for player sales, generating $218 million. Notable outgoing transfers include Lucas Harrington to Hull City and Xavier Gozo to Crystal Palace.
