Syria arrests Assad-era officer who fled prison sentence in Austria

Syrian state news agency SANA reported that security forces have arrested Musab Abu Rukbah, a former security officer from the Bashar al-Assad era, in the city of Nawa in Daraa province. Last month, a Vienna court sentenced Abu Rukbah to eight years in prison for bodily harm, aggravated coercion, and sexual assault against detainees while he headed the criminal investigations department in Raqqa. Having lived in Austria since 2014, Abu Rukbah fled the country while his appeal was pending and returned to Syria. SANA stated that he had entered Syria illegally and has been referred to the relevant authorities for legal proceedings. It remains unclear whether Austria has requested his extradition; Austrian officials previously noted that his departure during the appeals process did not violate Austrian law.
