Michigan Democratic Senate Nominee Abdul El-Sayed Apologizes for Comments on Synagogue Attack

Michigan Democratic Senate nominee Abdul El-Sayed is meeting with Jewish party leaders to ease concerns ahead of the November election. According to CNN, El-Sayed, who won a narrow primary victory, is working to unify the party. His past rhetoric, including describing Israeli military actions in Gaza as "bloodthirsty" and accusing Israeli leaders of genocide, has caused significant friction with Jewish voters. El-Sayed has also opposed unconditional US military aid to Israel and has faced criticism for his stance on Israel's right to exist.

A primary point of contention remains his response to a March attack on the Temple Israel synagogue near Detroit, where Ayman Ghazali drove an explosives-laden vehicle into the building. At the time, El-Sayed condemned the attack but also referred to a "cycle of violence," which critics viewed as an attempt to justify the act. On Saturday, while addressing the Michigan Democratic Jewish Caucus, El-Sayed apologized, stating, "To anybody who feels like my comments might have been hurtful, I’m really sorry. That was not my intention." He added that while he intended to provide context, it was not the appropriate time to do so.

During the Michigan Democratic Party's state convention in Lansing, El-Sayed received a strong reception, though some prominent Democrats remained absent due to ongoing tensions. El-Sayed avoided naming AIPAC directly when discussing campaign spending against him and focused his message on domestic priorities. He stated that while there may be disagreements on foreign policy, he remains committed to equal rights for both Palestinians and Israelis, while emphasizing that tax dollars should be prioritized for needs within the United States.
