Converse apologizes for sneaker ad after critics say it uses racist imagery

Converse, a subsidiary of Nike, has removed an advertisement from all its platforms following widespread online criticism regarding the use of imagery perceived as racist. The ad featured K-pop singer Karina wearing a triangular white skirt while holding a pair of Chuck 70 sneakers. Online critics argued that the skirt's shape resembled the hoods worn by the Ku Klux Klan, while the manner in which the sneakers were held evoked imagery of lynching victims. In a statement to CBS News, Converse apologized, acknowledging that the image was deeply upsetting and should not have been published. Civil rights attorney Lee Merritt stated that the apology does not undo the failures that occurred during the company's legal and marketing review processes. Marketing experts and social justice advocates, including Nadine Smith, CEO of Color of Change, questioned how such an image could pass through internal review stages without being flagged. Marcus Collins, a marketing expert, noted that while the company may not have intended to cause offense, public perception is what matters, and Converse now faces the challenge of rebuilding consumer trust. This incident follows a similar controversy in August, when the retailer Target was forced to pull a Halloween costume after critics accused it of evoking racist caricatures.
