Amnesty International urges Thailand to halt imminent forcible return of two Uyghur men to China

According to Amnesty International, Secretary General Agnès Callamard responded to reports that two Uyghur men recently moved to an Immigration Detention Centre in Thailand face imminent forcible deportation to China. Callamard stated that Thai authorities must immediately halt any plans to forcibly return the two men, who face a real risk of torture, arbitrary detention, and enforced disappearance. The organization noted that the men fled persecution more than a decade ago and have spent over 12 years in detention in Thailand. Amnesty International called on Thailand to uphold its obligations under international law regarding the principle of non-refoulement and to allow the men access to lawyers of their choice while working to find a safe and voluntary third-country solution.
