Amnesty International: African leaders must call for an end to trafficking of Africans into Russian military at summit

Amnesty International has stated that African leaders attending the Russia-Africa summit (28-29 October in Moscow) must demand that Russian authorities immediately end the coercive and deceptive recruitment of African nationals into Russian military forces to fight in Ukraine. Directors of Amnesty International's African sections emphasized that remaining silent on this issue would be a disservice to their citizens. According to the organization, many of these practices amount to human trafficking, which is a crime under international law. In a briefing published on 10 September 2026, Amnesty International documented how Russian authorities exploit economic hardship and use deception to draw African nationals into combat roles.
