North American summer box office set to surpass $4 billion by Monday

The North American summer box office is performing strongly, with data from Rentrak indicating that total takings are expected to exceed $4 billion by Monday. Revenue between 1 May and 9 August reached $3.985 billion, leaving a gap of only $14.8 million. The North American market last surpassed this threshold in 2023, when it reached $4.095 billion. Should this year's figures cross the $4 billion mark, it will represent the second time since the pandemic and the fourteenth time in box office history that summer takings have reached this level. The all-time record remains with the summer of 2013, which saw $4.755 billion in sales, led by Iron Man 3 at $409 million and Despicable Me 2 at $367.7 million. This year's success is not limited to high-budget franchise films. Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse (Sony/Marvel), Toy Story 5 (Disney/Pixar), and Odyssey (Universal) have collectively grossed $1.58 billion. Additionally, content creators transitioning from YouTube have contributed significantly to the box office; films such as Obsession by Cory Barker and The Backrooms by Kane Parsons have generated a combined $460.7 million in the US market. These five titles account for approximately $2 billion, or 50 percent of total North American summer revenue. This report arrives as the film industry continues to navigate commercial discussions, including speculation regarding a potential merger between Paramount and Warner Bros. Discovery.
