According to The Guardian, the Grand Theft Auto (GTA) series, arguably the most cinematic video game franchise, has studied and adopted the themes, conventions, and visual dynamism of great gangster and action movies over the past three decades. Keith Stuart highlights 10 movies and one TV show that have shaped the GTA experience. Influences include 'Speed' for its vehicular destruction, 'The Warriors' for its depiction of street gangs, 'Scarface' for its rags-to-riches criminal narrative, and the TV series 'Miami Vice' for its glossy aesthetic. Other notable influences cited are 'Goodfellas' for its structural use of music and immigrant themes, 'Boyz n the Hood' for the atmosphere of 'San Andreas', and 'Heat' for the epic heist structures in GTA 5. Finally, 'Bonnie and Clyde' is noted as a blueprint for the 'romantic-couple-on-the-run' narrative expected in the upcoming GTA 6.
