Kushner, Hamas chief in Egypt for talks on advancing Trump’s Gaza plan

Jared Kushner, envoy and son-in-law of Donald Trump, met with Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sissi in the coastal city of El-Alamein on Sunday. The talks focused on advancing Trump’s postwar plan for Gaza. According to reports, Kushner also held meetings with Egyptian, Qatari, and Turkish mediators.

Simultaneously, Hamas official Khalil al-Hayya is in Cairo for discussions with Egyptian intelligence chief Hassan Rashad. Diplomatic sources told Reuters that Hamas representatives were present at some of these meetings. A spokesperson for the Egyptian presidency stated that the talks emphasized the need for all parties to fulfill their obligations under the Gaza ceasefire agreement.

While Hamas has stated it is prepared to hand over its weapons to a Palestinian technical committee under the supervision of Trump’s Board of Peace, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has publicly rejected the 15-point roadmap. Netanyahu maintains that Israeli forces will not withdraw from Gaza until Hamas is fully disarmed.

On the ground, the Israeli military reported targeting two operatives in separate airstrikes in Khan Younis and Nuseirat. These strikes followed an incident on Saturday where an IDF tank was hit by an explosive device in southern Gaza, an act the military described as a violation of the ceasefire. Kushner is scheduled to travel to Israel on Monday for meetings with Israeli officials.
