Spider-Man: New Day becomes highest-grossing Hollywood film in Indian history

Spider-Man: New Day has become the highest-grossing Hollywood film in Indian box office history following a $10.6 million weekend, bringing its cumulative total to $52.8 million. Starring Tom Holland and Zendaya, the film broke the previous record held by James Cameron’s 2022 release, Avatar: The Way of Water, in only 11 days. The film began its Indian theatrical run on 30 July, one day ahead of its global release, and has faced minimal competition thus far. However, two major Indian films are scheduled for release next weekend: Batwara 1947, starring Sunny Deol, and Awarapan 2, directed by Nitin Kakkar and starring Emraan Hashmi. Deadline reports that this summer has been a strong period for Hollywood films in the Indian market. Christopher Nolan’s Odyssey, released on 17 July, and Obsession, which premiered on 29 May, have both reportedly crossed the 1 billion Indian rupee mark, equivalent to approximately $10 million. This performance may signal a recovery for the Indian cinema market in the first half of the year, where the success of both major international films and domestic productions is playing a vital role in reviving box office revenue.
