Vietnam authorities charge man with rape following allegation by American student

Authorities in Vietnam have charged a 23-year-old man with rape following an allegation by Nguyen Thi Quynh Tam, a 24-year-old American student. Tam, who was in Vietnam for a banking internship, reported that she was assaulted on July 5 while staying at a resort in Phu Tho. She stated that she decided to speak publicly to help protect other women, despite the rarity of such disclosures in Vietnam. Tam alleged that she faced pressure from the suspect's family to accept a financial settlement and that local police initially urged her to resolve the matter privately. A spokesperson for Vietnam’s foreign ministry confirmed that legal proceedings have been initiated in accordance with local law but did not address the allegations regarding police conduct. The suspect's father claimed in an email to the Associated Press that the encounter was intimate, though he denied pressuring the victim to drop the case. The investigation gained momentum after Tam sought assistance from U.S. officials and the office of Senator Ted Cruz.
