Russian officials report 13 dead in Ukrainian drone strike on Tatarstan

Russian officials have stated that a Ukrainian drone strike on the Republic of Tatarstan has resulted in at least 13 deaths. According to Russian authorities, the victims include one child, and 39 others have been injured. This incident is being described as one of the deadliest individual attacks on Russian territory since the start of Moscow's full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The strike targeted the city of Nizhnekamsk, located more than 1,100 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, which hosts several major oil refineries and a large petrochemical company. Kyiv has not yet commented on the attack. Local sources reported that the strike lasted for several hours, continuing from night until morning. Unverified footage shared on social media shows extensive smoke and flames in the sky, accompanied by the sound of air raid sirens. The BBC has not independently verified the authenticity of these images. Moscow stated that both industrial facilities and residential areas were targeted. The Russian Investigative Committee said that civilians who were not involved in any military operations were present at the site, a claim the BBC has not independently verified. Rustam Minnikhanov, the head of the Republic of Tatarstan, confirmed the attack and expressed his condolences to the victims' families. Radmir Belyaev, the mayor of Nizhnekamsk, described the event as a great pain for everyone. Tatarstan officials have declared a period of public mourning. Russia claimed that its air defences shot down more than 450 Ukrainian drones overnight. Ukraine has increased its long-range strikes on Russia in recent months, frequently targeting depots and energy infrastructure, which reports suggest has increased the number of civilian casualties within Russia. Meanwhile, Russia continues its regular, large-scale air strikes against Ukrainian cities and residential areas. Last week, a combined drone and missile attack on Kyiv resulted in 21 deaths, and in Kharkiv, a city near the front line, five people were killed in a Russian artillery strike overnight.
