COP31 explained: Why the Türkiye climate summit matters

According to Amnesty International, the annual UN climate conference (COP31) is taking place from 9 to 20 November 2026 in Antalya. The summit occurs as the UN warns that the world is on track to overshoot the 1.5°C global warming limit. Amnesty International, noting the joint leadership of Türkiye and Australia, has called on both nations to demonstrate credible leadership by resolving internal contradictions in their energy policies. The organization stresses that governments must fulfill their human rights obligations by ending fossil fuel expansion, scaling up climate finance, and supporting vulnerable communities. Furthermore, Amnesty International highlighted recent crackdowns on civil society and media in Türkiye, warning that without protected civic space, achieving climate justice will remain impossible.
