Being Heumann review – stirring biopic of a pioneering disability rights campaigner
According to The Guardian, the film 'Being Heumann' is based on the memoir of disability rights activist Judy Heumann. British actor Ruth Madeley stars as Heumann. The film focuses on her efforts to force the federal government to implement Section 504 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act, which had been resisted by the Nixon, Ford, and Carter administrations. In 1977, Heumann led a sit-in at the San Francisco Health, Education and Welfare offices, forming a coalition that included gay action groups and the Black Panthers. Mark Ruffalo plays Joseph Califano, the then-Secretary of Health. Guardian critic Peter Bradshaw notes that the film effectively demonstrates how active struggle, rather than passive compliance, was the key to the movement's success.
