Nechirvan Barzani’s Role as Secret Mediator Between Washington and Tehran

According to an Axios report, Nechirvan Barzani, President of the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, acted as a secret intermediary between the Donald Trump administration and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Barzani, who is fluent in Farsi and maintains personal ties with senior Iranian officials, was reportedly tapped by the Trump administration to establish a direct channel with IRGC commander Gen. Ahmad Vahidi. Brett McGurk, a former Middle East adviser to several U.S. presidents, described Barzani as a pragmatic problem-solver respected across the region. The report states that in May, then-U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard requested that Barzani facilitate a direct line to Gen. Vahidi. Following an encrypted phone call, Vahidi reportedly expressed the IRGC's willingness to resolve the crisis through negotiations. However, these efforts ultimately collapsed due to Iranian concerns regarding Israeli intelligence presence in Iraqi Kurdistan, which prevented the parties from meeting in person. Meanwhile, tensions have escalated over the Strait of Hormuz, with Donald Trump threatening to annex the waterway as U.S. territory. Iranian officials, including Kazem Gharibabadi and Abbas Araghchi, have rejected direct negotiations and reaffirmed Iran's control over the strategic waterway. Additionally, Brig. Gen. Reza Naqdi stated in an interview with Iranian state television that Iran remains on the winning side of the conflict, characterizing U.S. strategy as confused and lacking direction.
