Abdul El-Sayed’s Historic Victory in US Senate Election

According to Alhurra, Abdul El-Sayed, a physician and politician from the progressive wing of the Democratic Party, secured a historic victory in the Michigan US Senate race by defeating his Republican rival, Mike Rogers. This win makes him the first Muslim elected to the US Senate. El-Sayed's campaign was marked by controversy, particularly regarding his stance on Israel and his calls to halt US military aid, which sparked internal divisions within the Democratic Party. He also faced unsubstantiated accusations from political opponents, including Donald Trump. El-Sayed, a former executive director of public health in Detroit, emphasized in his victory speech the need for continued political engagement to drive structural change. The victory occurred as Democrats secured majorities in both the Senate and the House of Representatives during the midterm elections.
