Uefa faces political flashpoint over Sevastopol’s ascent in Russian football
According to the Guardian, the promotion of FC Sevastopol from Crimea to Russia's professional third tier has presented Uefa and Fifa with a serious political challenge. The club, which was declared champion of group one in the Football National League (FNL) 2B last month, has applied for a license to compete at a higher level. Under Uefa rules, Crimean clubs are prohibited from participating in competitions organized by the Russian Football Union. Valery Chaly, the CEO of Sevastopol, stated that they plan to advance to the next stage according to regulations. This comes as the Ukrainian Association of Football has repeatedly called for Russia's expulsion from international football bodies due to violations of statutes. Previously, in 2023, Uefa and Fifa remained silent regarding the participation of Crimean clubs in amateur Russian leagues, but promotion to a professional tier could increase pressure to impose new sanctions.
