China Miéville wins £10,000 Goldsmiths prize for The Rouse
According to the Guardian, China Miéville has won the £10,000 Goldsmiths prize for his novel, The Rouse. The work, which took two decades to complete, is a 1,264-page epic blending paranormal thriller elements with a historical saga spanning British imperial and cold war history. Francis Spufford, chair of the judges, described the book as one that broke expectations explosively through its ambition, bold use of history, and linguistic experimentation. Hari Kunzru, another judge, called the book a 'monumental work' that stretches language to its limits. The prize, launched in 2013 to reward fiction that 'breaks the mould', has now awarded its longest novel to date.
