Poet Grace Nichols wins £10,000 Pioneer prize
According to the Guardian, 76-year-old Guyana-born poet Grace Nichols, who moved to the UK in 1977, has been named the winner of the 2026 Royal Society of Literature (RSL) Pioneer prize. The £10,000 award, established by former RSL president Bernardine Evaristo, recognises women writers over 60 who broke through when the literary world was less open to them. The judging panel, led by Ruth Borthwick, praised Nichols for her unique poetic language, which blends Creole and standard English, and for bridging Caribbean and British cultures. Nichols, who received the Queen’s gold medal for poetry in 2021, will be celebrated at an event at the British Library on 1 March 2027.
