Escalating Tensions: Iran Targets U.S. Bases Across the Persian Gulf

Erfan Fard, a counter-terrorism and Middle East analyst, wrote in an opinion piece for Arutz Sheva that recent Iranian missile and drone attacks on U.S. military positions across the Middle East represent more than standard retaliation. According to Fard, by targeting American assets in Kuwait, Bahrain, Jordan, and Iraq, Tehran is attempting to treat the U.S. regional base network as a single, interconnected battlespace, a strategy described as horizontal escalation. While Tehran claimed to have struck the Ali Al Salem Air Base in Kuwait and alleged U.S. casualties, American officials disputed these claims, stating that preliminary assessments showed no U.S. fatalities. The analyst suggests that Iran's strategy of using coercive diplomacy to pressure host nations may backfire, potentially driving Arab states toward deeper security cooperation with Washington. Fard warned that as the conflict expands to include multiple countries, military bases, the Strait of Hormuz, and global energy supplies, the margin for error has collapsed, increasing the risk of a broader regional crisis.
