Yanis Yushvaev, reputed organized crime boss, gunned down in Caesarea

Yanis Yushvaev, identified by police as the leader of an organized crime group associated with Israel’s Caucasus community, was shot dead on Sunday at a gas station near Caesarea. According to Ynet, the 40-year-old Or Akiva resident was killed at point-blank range in broad daylight. Israeli police have classified the killing as criminally motivated and have launched a large-scale manhunt for the suspects, who are believed to have fled the scene in a vehicle.

For years, Yushvaev was a primary intelligence target for the Israel Police’s Coastal District, facing repeated arrests for alleged involvement in shootings, arson, and threats. However, due to insufficient evidence, many of these investigations did not result in significant indictments. About a decade ago, Yushvaev survived a previous assassination attempt in Hadera, after which he continued to accumulate influence in the Sharon region.

The only case that resulted in an indictment against Yushvaev occurred in 2021, when he was charged with threatening a businessman from Be'er Sheva. According to the indictment, Yushvaev demanded $1.1 million in debt repayment, threatening to eliminate the businessman if the money was not transferred. During a court hearing in November 2025, police representatives described Yushvaev as the head of a criminal gang involved in blood feuds.

Following the shooting, Israeli police deployed large numbers of officers, erected roadblocks, and utilized a helicopter to search for the perpetrators. Police Commissioner Danny Levy visited the scene to oversee the investigation. The killing marks the end of a long-standing criminal career for a man who had been under intense police scrutiny for years.
