IRGC Claims Agreement with Oman on Sharing Strait of Hormuz Revenues

The Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) claimed on Wednesday that an agreement has been reached with Oman to divide the waters of the Strait of Hormuz and share the resulting revenues. The IRGC stated that the strait belongs to Iran and Oman, alleging that the United States is obstructing the implementation of the negotiations. However, a joint statement released by the foreign ministers of Iran and Oman following a meeting between Abbas Araghchi and Badr Albusaidi in Tehran mentioned only the establishment of a temporary corridor, mine clearance, and maritime traffic management, with no mention of revenue sharing.

According to a framework discussed in recent weeks, ships entering the Persian Gulf are intended to use the northern route in Iranian-controlled waters, while outbound ships would use the southern route in Omani waters. This temporary 60-day arrangement does not include transit fees, but Iran is demanding the right to collect payments from ships in a permanent agreement.

Kazem Gharibabadi, Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister, clarified that these understandings do not signify a full reopening of the strait and do not apply to military vessels. Tehran continues to condition a return to normalcy on the cessation of U.S. military activity, the lifting of the blockade on Iranian ports, and the resolution of compensation issues.

Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Tuesday that all mines in the strait have been cleared or destroyed, warning that any vessel attempting to lay new mines would be attacked. According to data from Kpler, shipping traffic in the region remains sparse, with only five cargo ships passing through on Tuesday, compared to a daily average of about 15 in the ten days prior.
