Ugandan ‘boy king’ Oyo Nyimba dies at 34

Oyo Nyimba, a tribal monarch in Uganda who ascended his ancient throne as an infant, has died at the age of 34. The death of the King of Tooro was announced on Friday by Prime Minister Calvin Rwomiire Akiiki. Tooro authorities stated that the continuity of the Crown is assured and that a prince, whose identity will be revealed in accordance with tradition, has been named as his heir. The news shocked many Ugandans who were unaware that the king had been receiving treatment for an undisclosed illness abroad. King Oyo was coronated in 1995 at the age of 3 following his father's death, earning him the unofficial title of the world's youngest king. He led his people through regents until reaching the age of 18. Traditional kingdoms in Uganda were banned after independence from British colonial rule but were restored in 1993. While these monarchs hold no formal political authority and are barred from partisan politics, they remain influential figures as guardians of tribal culture.
