BBC joins Working Title’s Jane Eyre adaptation starring Aimee Lou Wood

According to Deadline, the BBC has joined the new television adaptation of Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel Jane Eyre, produced by Working Title. The project will star Aimee Lou Wood, known for her roles in The White Lotus and Sex Education, as the titular character. Emmy-nominated Wood was previously attached to the project. The screenplay is being written by Miriam Battye, a Writers Guild of America award winner for her work on Succession. Working Title, a prominent British production company, is overseeing the production. Deadline reports that the BBC has now come on board as a development partner, broadcaster, and financier. No further details regarding production or broadcast dates have been announced. Jane Eyre follows the emotional and moral development of an orphan girl in 19th-century England as she seeks love, independence, and social equality. A key role yet to be cast is that of Edward Rochester, the brooding master of Thornfield Hall. The novel is considered ahead of its time for its exploration of social class, gender, religion, and feminism, as well as its protagonist’s individualistic and witty nature. Deadline notes that Wood’s acting style is considered a strong fit for the tone of the project.
