British author’s experience with AI-driven scam fan mail
Joe Dunthorne, writing for the Guardian, details his experience receiving daily, highly personalized scam emails from fake fans generated by AI. These scammers attempt to solicit money under the guise of promoting his books. Dunthorne notes that the AI models used for these scams have been trained on authors' copyrighted works, effectively allowing these systems to manipulate writers using their own literary styles. In an attempt to expose a scammer, Dunthorne traced the correspondence to an organized crime network in the Philippines, where individuals are often trafficked and forced to work in scam compounds under coercive conditions, highlighting the dark reality behind the automated messages.
