Iran’s drone hunt escalates as Tehran targets US spy tech to expose battlefield secrets

According to Fox News, drone experts have warned that Iran is conducting coordinated, deliberate missions to capture U.S. naval drones in the Strait of Hormuz. The objective is to gather intelligence on American surveillance capabilities and identify methods to evade U.S. defense systems. Cameron Chell, CEO of U.S. drone manufacturer Draganfly, described these efforts as "absolutely deliberate drone capture missions."

Tensions in the Gulf escalated on September 14 after the U.S. military reportedly destroyed two Iranian small boats during an attempted seizure by the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) of an American unmanned surface vessel. Capt. Tim Hawkins, a spokesperson for U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM), confirmed the attempted seizure, stating that the U.S. responded forcefully and the drone remains under U.S. operational control.

Previously, on September 8, Iran captured a Dive-LD autonomous underwater drone manufactured by the defense contractor Anduril. Anduril CEO Palmer Luckey stated that the drone was designed for dangerous environments and had provided significant value for months before its capture. However, U.S. Navy representatives noted that the recovered drone was an older model that had malfunctioned.

Experts suggest that even brief access to such hardware allows Iran to gain insights into the sensors and intelligence infrastructure of the U.S. Navy. Iran has a history of such actions, most notably the 2011 seizure of an RQ-170 Sentinel stealth drone, which Tehran later claimed to have reverse-engineered to build domestic lookalikes. Analysts argue these efforts are part of a broader strategy by Tehran to gain tactical advantages in the theater of operations.
