Escalating Tensions in the Persian Gulf; Exchange of Fire Between US Fleet and Iranian Tankers

Maritime clashes between the United States and Iran have entered a new phase, with approximately 10 targets struck in a single day. The US Central Command (CENTCOM) announced it had targeted three Iranian oil tankers in response to Iran firing ballistic missiles at two US warships. According to CENTCOM, these tankers were part of a 'shadow network' financing the IRGC. In the operation, the tankers 'Dauni' near Kharg Island and 'Stark 1' near Jask were disabled, while the tanker 'Kilo' was destroyed in the Sea of Oman. CENTCOM Commander Brad Cooper stated the message to the IRGC is clear: imposing economic costs for targeting US vessels. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth warned that any Iranian fire would be met with the destruction and sinking of Iranian tankers. The Iranian Foreign Ministry condemned the attacks as a 'war crime,' while Iranian officials maintained that Tehran is defending its sovereignty against a naval blockade.
