Ali al-Taher Hill: Does Israel’s Field Shift Deepen Tehran’s Strategic Dilemma?

Israeli forces have turned Ali al-Taher hill in southern Lebanon into a strategic turning point following their recent advance. According to Israeli officials, the hill, which overlooks vast areas, was seized as part of an 'advanced defense zone' to dismantle Hezbollah's infrastructure. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that military operations in the heights were complete, stating the area no longer poses a threat to Israel. The Israeli military also reported achieving operational control over tunnels and facilities beneath the hill.

Military experts, including Brigadier General Elias Hanna, suggest that Israel has shifted its doctrine from 'deterrence' to 'preemptive combat and systematic destruction.' The hill, part of a 4.5-square-kilometer tactical complex that includes Beaufort Castle (Qala'at al-Shaqif), provides fire control over areas such as Nabatieh and Iqlim al-Tuffah. Analysts argue this development places Tehran before a difficult test: inaction implies abandoning a field proxy, while a military response risks direct confrontation with Israel.

Reports indicate that three officials told Reuters that Iran warned the United States via Oman last month that it would respond forcefully to any attack on Ali al-Taher hill, where Iranian military personnel are reportedly stationed alongside Hezbollah fighters. There are also unverified claims that Israel has detained high-ranking IRGC officers in the area, further complicating the situation. Currently, the stalemate in political negotiations, driven by a lack of mutual trust and the influence of Tehran's decisions on Hezbollah, has increased the likelihood of Israel establishing a permanent security belt in southern Lebanon.
