Ukraine strikes deep into Russia’s Arctic gas heartland as Trump pushes Putin toward peace

Ukrainian drones struck deep into Russia’s Arctic north on Wednesday, hitting an industrial facility in Novy Urengoy, a city at the heart of Russia’s primary natural-gas producing region. According to Russian officials and the Associated Press, the strike caused a fire, though regional Governor Dmitry Artyukhov stated that air defenses repelled the attack and that falling debris sparked the blaze. The Ukrainian defense manufacturer Fire Point appeared to claim responsibility, noting the drone successfully covered more than 3,300 km to hit its target.

The strike coincides with a renewed push by U.S. President Donald Trump to end the war. Speaking at Joint Base Andrews, Trump stated he had spoken with President Vladimir Putin and suggested both Moscow and Kyiv are prepared to negotiate, though he cited the personal animosity between Putin and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy as a significant hurdle. U.S. special envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner recently visited both capitals to revive talks, though the Associated Press reported no breakthroughs were achieved.

Despite diplomatic efforts, military escalation continues. Following the departure of the U.S. delegation from Kyiv, Russia launched major missile and drone attacks on the Ukrainian capital, resulting in multiple casualties. A European intelligence source told Fox News Digital that this simultaneous diplomacy and military escalation presents a dilemma for Western governments, noting that Russian officials may interpret outreach as a sign of weakness.

Civilian tolls remain high, with the United Nations reporting that July saw the highest number of Ukrainian civilian casualties since March 2022. Beyond the Arctic strike, President Zelenskyy confirmed that Ukrainian forces targeted military and energy facilities in the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk. Russia continued its own long-range campaign, with strikes reported near the Ukrainian-Moldovan border and further attacks on Kyiv.
