Jasper Steinmetz, a recent graduate of the same university, struck up a conversation after noticing James wearing an Indiana athletic backpack. Steinmetz learned that James had been homeless for eight months. A subsequent online search revealed that James had been a standout four-star football recruit who played for Indiana University before transferring to Purdue and briefly returning to Indiana. Following a severe knee injury and a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, James dropped out of school in 2023 and lost his possessions. Steinmetz launched an online fundraiser that collected $17,000, which was used to secure an apartment and provide essential supplies for James. Reflecting on his fresh start, James expressed his determination to succeed and not let those who supported him down.
